James Hunter: Working People
Join us for a special in-person event with leading Scottish historian and author James Hunter, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of the Highlands and Islands, who will be interviewed about his new book<i>'Working People: A Family through Three Centuries'.</i><div><br></div><div>James, who was born and grew up in Duror and who’s better known locally as Jim, will speak about how his exploration of his own and his wife Evelyn’s family history, revealed all sorts of information about how his and Evelyn’s folk lived and got by in times past. Among those folk were crofters, shepherds, stalkers and others in Ardgour, Strontian, Morvern and other parts of the Highlands. Among them, too, were stonemasons; carters; coachmen; power loom weavers; navvies; domestic servants; and lots more. Many of the lives encountered bring into stark relief the hardships of times past. But equally important are insights into how ordinary women, men and children persevered and got by. The cumulative result is a remarkable tribute to people of a sort who seldom make it – certainly not by name – into standard history books.</div><div><br></div><div>After the event, James will be selling signed copies of his new book, provided by Highland Bookshop. All tickets £6, so get in early for the best seats!</div>PT1H30MUJames Hunter
