HC Talk Series: A History Of The Arts In Lochaber and a Dream of What the Future Could Hold

A History Of The Arts In Lochaber and a Dream of What the Future Could Hold - An entertaining and informative talk by Rob Fairley. An illustrated talk tracing the history of the arts in Lochaber from around 600 BC to today, taking a look at the artists shaped by the area and how nearly sixty years of living and working here has influenced his own work… and ending with a glimpse of what might be possible in the years to come. Rob Fairley went to Edinburgh College of Art and then moved to Mallaig and then in 1975 on to the island of Shona Beag, where he lived what has been described as an ‘hermetic’ existence, living as much as possible off the land and from the sea and making ephemeral land based work. For many years he was involved with Room 13, an independent studio based in Caol Primary School completely run by the artists who used it. At its height, the concept was adopted by over a hundred schools worldwide and radically changed the idea of what “child art” could be. Rob’s work has been exhibited widely. His work can be found in many private and public collections worldwide, and he has appeared on several TV and radio shows. This event is part of our Highland Cinema ‘Special Talk Series 2026’.
