The basking shark is the second-largest fish in the world at up to 11m in length and 7 tonnes in weight. Yet it feeds only on zooplankton, that it sieves from the water passing through its enormous gills. A regular summer visitor, the animal appears as almost a prehistoric relic, yet cutting edge research over recent years shows what a remarkably well adapted creature it is. Hunted for centuries in our waters, mainly for its huge livers, it is now a highly protected creature on the west coast, partly due to its global status as an eco-tourism ‘must-see’. Whilst this newfound value is welcome, it may bring its own risks, from public and commercial interests. How serious a threat do these activities pose to the shark and many other attractive species in the same waters, what is being done to counter those threats, and to shape conservation strategies for the future? Colin Speedie will reveal all this and more, in this fascinating and insightful talk, plus audience Q&A. Colin has been a lifelong fan of the basking shark and spent many years studying the species as a citizen scientist on behalf of a variety of conservation charities. Now retired to a home in the Highlands, he spends as much time as possible out on the water enjoying the beauty of the local waters and the company of wildlife.
