3,000 Feet

3,000 Feet - The Highlander, the Early Mountaineers and Scotland’s Highest Mountains This is the remarkable story of the origins of Scottish mountaineering and of Hugh Thomas Munro, the man whose name has become synonymous with Scotland's highest mountains. While modern-day athletes test themselves against these timeless mountain summits, Munro's enduring list of "Mountains Exceeding 3,000 Feet in Height" has evolved into a cultural cornerstone of modern-day Scotland, building a legacy that Munro himself could never have imagined. Scottish mountaineering as we know it originated in the sciences, academia and the arts. But these hill-going pioneers came across a society in the Highland glens that had only just undergone immense upheaval with far-reaching consequences. Their journeys bridged societies, language, class and culture in pursuit of the very summits we still climb to this day. This documentary film has been put together by local climber and filmmaker Kevin Woods with help from Lindsay Hill, and includes a lot of Kevin's own narrated material in the Scottish mountains, along with contributions from Finlay Wild (runner), Jamie Aarons (Munros record holder), the late Robin Campbell (the authority on Hugh Munro's life) and Irene Leckie (Munro Society). The film also includes a substantial volume of A E Robertson's photography (the first to complete the Munros in 1901), shedding light on his huge collection that has not previously been seen in film to this degree. This special evening will be hosted by Kevin Woods in person, who will provide a short introduction and audience Q&A afterwards.DocumentaryPT1H35MU2025-06-05
